TNA has an Umpires Coordinator who oversees the umpiring roster each weekend of TNA competition, allocates and organises the umpires for Junior Rep Trials and Carnivals, Senior Rep trials, and Junior Championships.

In addtion, the Umpire Coordinator assesses umpires across the season to allocate their TNA Level Badges and prepares and assesses umpires for their National C Badge qualification.

At TNA, we expect our umpires to be enthusiastic, accountable, and professional at all times.

As with any TNA members, our umpires are also subject to TNA By-Laws, Executive Directives and Codes of Conduct. Umpires are required to also adhere to the Member Protection Policy and Code of Conduct as available on Netball Australia’s website (Integrity Policies - Netball Australia).

All umpires are required to wear either a white shirt or jumper when umpiring at all levels and appropriate footwear. It is an International Netball Federation rule that umpires are to wear clothing that is distinct from teams’ playing uniforms and suitable sports footwear.

TNA have two umpiring rosters that are used each weekend during Winter Competition:

1. Inters and Seniors Umpiring Slots: The slots on this roster are allocated by the TNA Umpires Coordinator based on the Competition draw. It is the Clubs and Schools responsibility to assign individual umpires to their allocated slots each week. Your club or school Umpires Coordinator will send you the club/school roster that fills these slots.

2. U13-U15 Representative Players Roster for Year 4/5/6 games: This roster is wholly managed and allocated by the TNA Umpires Coordinator. This is where our Junior Rep players give back to their association while learning and developing an important skill.

For Year 2 and Year 3 games, Clubs and Schools must supply their own umpire to their team's games. The TNA Umpires Coordinator does not roster these games or allocate slots. It is recommended that the Clubs and Schools add these teams to their weekly roster or permanently assign an umpire to the team for the season.

If you are a club umpire and a Junior Rep Umpire (including a shadow), you may be allocated on games in both rosters each week. You MUST check each roster to ensure you know all the games that you are responsible for umpiring.

Round 1

Players

Fingernails shall be short and smooth. Players are not permitted to wear gloves to cover long nails. Umpires are permitted to instruct players to remove gloves prior to games commencing to check nail length and will not grant permission for players to take the court unless nails are compliant (short and smooth)

No item of jewellery shall be worn, except a wedding ring and/or medical alert bracelet. If either or both are worn, each shall be taped. No earrings, or any other non-medical piercings are permitted, they must all be removed.

Umpires will not grant permission for players to take the court they have piercings taped/are not removed.

Harassment, swearing at or abuse of umpires will not be tolerated. This is against the TNA Code of Conduct and the TNA Sporting Behaviour and Discipline Policy. Incidents may results in penalties and/or sanctions against the player and/or their team.

Requirements for Players and Supporters

Supporters

Supporters must not approach an umpire during a game. Only a team captain, TNA Official or club umpiring coordinator may approach the umpires during a game. Team captains may ask an umpire during a break between quarters for rule clarifications.

Seek help

If you perceive there to be an issue with a game, please ask for a TNA Official or the TNA Umpires Coordinator to attend the court. Do not take matters into your own hands.

Getting into Umpiring

Umpiring is a great way to be involved in netball and the greater TNA community. We always need umpires and are happy for everyone to be involved.

First things first, is that you will need to know the rules of netball. You can simply do this by reading the INF rulebook or downloading the app on your mobile phone called ‘Rules of Netball’. Both the online version of the rulebook and the app are very user friendly and you can find rules easily by electronically searching for the information you’re looking for.

Badging System

In 2021, TNA reintroduced the district level badging system to reward and recognise its aspiring athletes in our own pathway system as each athlete progresses towards their national accreditation. This initiative is purely TNA/district related and is not recognised outside of TNA.

Each accreditation is assessed on an array of different criteria as well as the standard of game that the umpire is officiating. Our badging accreditations and expectations are as follows:

Level 1 – competent in making calls where the ball is on court; clear whistle; usually calls major infringements (contact, obstruction); mostly calls minor infringements (footwork, held ball). Competent in umpiring up to Year 6 Blue Division-Inters Division 4
Level 2 – competent in making calls where the ball is on court and starting to look 1 pass ahead of play to recognise infringements off ball; clear, loud and confident whistle and voice; set penalties correctly; usually calls major and minor infringements. Competent in umpiring up to Inters Division 2-Seniors Division 3/4
Level 3 – competent in making calls both on and off ball; starting to use ‘advantage’ rule; learning to deal with high conflict games; clear, loud and confident whistle and voice. Competent in umpiring Inters Division 1-Seniors Division 1/2
